Anti-hunting Campaign / Research

To get a further understanding, we started from researching already existing anti-hunting campaigns. The research was very limited as we found only two different campaigns.

The photographs for the first anti-hunting campaign which we found were taken by Russian photographer Olga Barantseva, who captured the imaged and said: 'We wanted to show the natural harmony between humans and bears. It is about showing a traditional friendship - just like between two human friends'.

Bizarre pictures have emerged of two models posing seductively with a giant brown bear as part of an anti-hunting campaign. Organisers wanted to highlight the importance of living 'side-by-side' with bears and to discourage hunting.
Loving embrace: Organisers of the photo shoot wanted to highlight the importance of living 'side-by-side' with bears and to discourage hunting Bear hug: Model Maria Sidorova is pictured kneeling on a single bed and wrapping her arms around Stephen the brown bear - in a forest outside Moscow Gentle giant: Lidia Fetisova lies down in the snow and cuddles up next to Stephen as the giant 650kg brown bear shows his fearsome claws
The next example is an article about Peta's campaign 'Shoot Selfies, Not Animals'. In an attempt at humor, thousands of hunters began using PETA’s frame on photos of themselves posing with the corpses of animals they’d killed. But ironically, their actions served only to introduce PETA and their anti-hunting message to a whole new audience.

“PETA owes a big thank-you to the would-be trolls who are spreading our message of compassion,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman says. “The supportive messages are pouring in from kind people who agree that only bullies or cowards get their kicks from gunning down beautiful wild animals.”
But the number of young children posing in the would-be trolls’ photos is cause for concern: Nearly every serial killer and school shooter killed animals before moving on to humans. PETA encourages parents to teach their children empathy for others by encouraging them to shoot with a camera instead of a gun.

Anti-hunting Campaign - Why hunted?

Image result for deer pinterestHunting might have been necessary for human survival in prehistoric times, but today most hunters stalk and kill animals merely for the thrill of it, not out of necessity. This unnecessary, violent form of “entertainment” rips animal families apart and leaves countless animals orphaned or badly injured when hunters miss their targets.

A British study of deer hunting found that 11 percent of deer killed by hunters died only after being shot two or more times and that some wounded deer suffered for more than 15 minutes before dying.

Hunting as Sport

Hunting is often called a sport as a way to pass off a cruel, needless killing spree as a socially acceptable, wholesome activity. However, sports involve competition between two consenting parties and the mediation of a referee. And no sport ends with the deliberate death of one unwilling participant.

Anti-hunting Campaign - Research - Deer

          Oh, Deer!

Deer is the king of the forest, the protector o all other creatures. For the native tribes of North America, the deer was a messenger, an animal of power, and a totem representing sensitivity, intuition, and gentleness.

What is the meaning of the deer totem?

The meanings associated with the deer combine both soft, gentle qualities with strength and determination:
  • Gentleness
  • Ability to move through life and obstacles with grace
  • Being in touch with inner child, innocence
  • Being sensitive and intuitive
  • Vigilance, ability to change directions quickly
  • Magical ability to regenerate, being in touch with life’s mysteries

Anti-hunting Campaign / Mind Map

I find the Visual Communication course very interesting, as it has so much to offer and I am eager to acquire more. During the Creative Networks at Ligh Night, I met a third-year Visual Communication student from my university to collaborate with and found a similar cause to fight for that we both believe in (animal rights).

As we met up, Farsya mentioned she is multidisciplinary as she is studying Visual Communication, so I found this as a good opportunity to gain skills in design disciplines I never tried before, especially 3d art. Farsya was eager to learn more about graphic design, so we decided to collaborate and teach each other.

Our first thought was to design a brief based on animals mainly because they cannot defend and stand for themselves. We started from researching about different animals issues from which we picked an anti-hunting campaign which we felt it should be discussed more. So, going further with this project we have chosen a deer because we found that a deer represents the king of the forest and is a protector of all. This gave us an idea to create an anti-hunting campaign which later on developed into a brand.

We started from creating a mind map where we could gather all ideas together in one place. Farsya and I decided to work on everything together; brainstorming concepts and ideas, the name of campaign, slogan, designs, mascot, logo, color scheme, photo-shoots, posters and etc. Our main idea was to create a deer sculpture for multiple uses such as a jewelry holder, plant pot, stationery container and simply for decoration.

Anti-hunting Campaign / Collaboration with Farsya / Brief

Brief

Hunting may have played an important role, next to plant gathering and scavenging, for human survival in prehistoric times, but the vast majority of modern hunters in developed countries stalk and kill animals for recreation. Hunting is a violent and cowardly form of outdoor entertainment that kills hundreds of millions of animals every year, many of whom are wounded and die a slow and painful death.

Hunters cause injuries, pain, and suffering to animals who are not adapted to defend themselves from bullets, traps and other cruel killing devices. Hunting destroys animal families and habitats and leaves terrified and dependent baby animals behind to starve to death.
Create and design an anti-hunting campaign which will convince readers to think twice about hunting and raise awareness of this issue.

Consideration

Consider who is the campaign aimed for and what designs appeal to them. Conduct research into methods that can draw customers in.

Extended Practice / Statement of Intent

During the course of Extended Practice I plan to produce a variety of work mainly focusing on editorial, brand identity, and packaging design in order explore the prospect of these areas being my specialisms for after university. I plan to use my graphic design and photography skills.

I will create a time plan to organize my work and complete it on time.

I plan to increase my confidence and skills by working in collaborative groups and contacting individuals for research and connections.

Module Self Evaluation

Design Practice 2 was a highly full speed, demanding module, allowing me to create something I am very proud of and I know I have been working on it very hard. This module was slightly difficult for me when it came to time management because of the break during Easter and having lots of submissions straight after the break so I left this brief till the end and it was very bad decision.

Brief 01 allowed me to work on my screen printing techniques and develop my skills as screen printing it's not something I am doing very often, mainly because of the long production time. It seems very quick and easy process to others but as I am a begginer of using printing method it took me more time to learn of how how to use it, but definitly I would like to do it again in the feature.

The second brief of this module gave me a lot of freedom of chosing a topic of the issue I am interested in. I have chosen Animals For Christmas presents as my topic mainly because I really enoyed the previous briefs this year which allowed me to work with animals and it's rights. Durring the process of design I become quite confused of what I am creating and if it is relevant to the issue. I started from designing a campaign but then I realized I can develop this idea by creating an online Charity. In terms of feedback, I feel like I have spoke to a lot of people mainly adults because I needed opinions on the issue or designs to make it successful. This taught me that it is important to to do surveys and gaining some opinion from public as it helps on developing the work and make it more effective.

I manage to learn about new softwate and develop my skills during this module. It was my second time this year of using Final Cut Pro to create an intereactive video and I really enoyed it as I knew some basics but during creating my video I could develop them and learn new ones. I'd like to delve deeper into for future briefs, and become a lot more confident using it.

Overall I feel my overall confidence and competence as a designer has blossomed over the course of this module, and I feel proud of the resolutions I had created for each brief, althought I would still make some changes to it.

There was a lot of creative freedom involved with this module wich in effect will prepare me for the challenges I will face in third year. I am very pleased with the work I have produced and I really enjoyed this module.

Product Range Distribution - Animals For Christmas Presents - Distribution

The commercial could be distributed anywhere on any tv. Also, posters could be distributed on in any print format for example billboards, in the underground, bus stops etc. The first example is of the tv advert and the rest of them are on signage around the London Underground, bus stops and billboards on the streets due to a lot of people walking past so it would definitely grab people's attention.

Product Range Distribution - Animals For Christmas Presents - Campaign - Final Digital Designs/ Print Mock ups

FINAL DIGITAL DESIGNS AND PRINTED MOCK UPS

For every single poster/ leaflet and the video, I have added a Charity's logo, so people will know which Charity has created this campaign.

Posters

A range of posters which could be downloaded from the Charity website as a high-quality PDFs for viewers to download and print to post at a local pet shop or anywhere is possible to do it.

Leaflets

High-quality leaflets which are available to download as PDF from the Charity webpage.
Also, the main idea of small leaflets was to make them look like shopping coupons which could be given out to people while shopping near the till.

Printed Mock Ups

Charity Donation Box

The Charity Donation Box can be used in pet shops where people are able to donate money for animals which has been left after Christmas. In the middle of the design, I have used all three animals which are main characters from the posters of this campaign. I have created a label for it:

Printed Mock Ups

Interactive Video/ TV Commercial

The campaign contains a video created by 'Four Paws' Charity. It contains facts which I have found during the research about this issue. The video lasts for 30 seconds.

Charity Online Web Page

An online Charity Web Page will help to get a larger audience. Using this web page people can donate, chose an animal to sponsor, read educational articles about Animals For Christmas presents and information about how much care each animal needs. Web Page also has a feature of contacting a charity or using online chat.

Feedback:

In the feedback, I have asked people about their opinions on the outcome which I have created for this brief and if they could what would they change or add to it.

- It looks very good, I think the design of the posters is very successful.
- Not sure about the logo or name 'Four Paws' as it doesn't have a link with Christmas.
- Designs are very good :)
- It would be good if you could add some starting pack for each animal which will explain how to take care of that pet.
- Good work
- Isn't the web page to friendly a bit?
- If I could change something I will possibly add some starter packs.

Brief Evaluation:

This brief was an extremely challenging and immersive project for which I knew that I would have a lot of deliverables to produce. This brief allowed me to take charge of my time management and gave me a freedom of selecting a topic which I am interested in.

Overall I am very pleased with my design, I think it creates a solution to an increasing problem
of treating animals as a Christmas presents, which later on they are easily becoming 'unwanted' Christmas presents. I became extremely passionate about my cause especially by the end of the brief. I'd love to see this become a real thing in the feature.

This brief allowed me to gain more knowledge and skills for using Final Cut Pro to create my video. I am very happy about the outcome of it as it looks as I wanted it to look like.

Product Range Distribution - Animals For Christmas Presents - Website Mock Up

This is the main website for 'Four Paws' charity. An online website will help to reach larger target audience as advertising/ promoting through social media become very popular. The website allows readers to get to all information created by this charity. It also allows downloading posters so readers are able to share them.

When it came to designing a web page, I have made a couple of changes to the layout of the page. The welcome page contains a gif of Christmas photographs so everyone entering this site would know what is it about straight away. The font style has been used the same as on the posters which are Bebas Neue and Corbel.

Feedback

- Positive feedback on creating an online charity.
- Positive feedback on 'welcoming' page of using different photographs of animals and creating a gif.
- Positive feedback on used font.
- Positive feedback on using 'donate' and 'sponsor' feature.
- Some people suggested to me to play a bit with the background color.
- To add the feature of emergency contact.
- Would be good to try to use red colors instead of gold.
- I should try to include a logo on each page.
- To add more articles and photos about what happens to unwanted animals after Christmas.

In conclusion, all the feedback from my peers of my design were positive. There are only a few suggestions of adjustments to the web page design which I can make.

Using a suggestion from feedback about changing a background I have experimented a bit with it. I feel the white background look much better as it makes pages look clear and the text is readable. I will stick to the white background.

Also during the feedback people suggested to me to add some more information about what happens to unwanted animals after Christmas. I have decided to add an extra page to the website in the articles sections. I have used some statistics and facts about how many animals is being dumped after Christmas. All the information I have taken from RSPCA website and my researched.

Here is a page which will be added:

Product Range Distribution - Animals For Christmas Presents - Charity Logo and Name

Votes

As I am creating a charity it is good to have own name and logo to be recognizable. I have come up with a couple of different names for the Charity and asked people to vote for the best one.

'When choosing a name for your pet fundraising event, look for something distinctive and, if possible, humorous. You want humor in your event name because people want to have a good time and socialize with other pet owners'.

- Four Paws  - 5
- Santa Paws - 3
- Paws Walk - 0
- Paw Prints - 1
- Great Tails - 0
- Paw Season - 2
- Furry Family - 2
- The Tails - 0

As people voted for 'Four Paws' and 'Santa Paws' names I have designed logos which are very simple in white and black using the print of the paw and the name of the Charity. It was hard to decide which name I will like to go with.

- Four Paws - a Simple and short name which will suit the charity as an organization.
- Santa Paws - It will suit the theme of the charity and it's Christmas concept.

I have asked a couple of people for a feedback about the names as I wasn't quite sure which one I should go with. The majority of feedback said I should go with 'Four Paws' as the other name 'Santa Paws' makes quite a confusion of what the charity is about.

Product Range Distribution - Animals For Christmas Presents - Online Charity Research

As my concept is based on creating an online charity specifying in Animals For Christmas Presents I have done a bit of research of how online animals charities looks like.

The first example is WWF page. 'WWF is the world’s leading independent conservation organisation. Our mission is to create a world where people and wildlife can thrive together.' The web page is friendly and colourful. containing lots of features like adoption, donation, a feature where everyone can join them. On the bottom of the page viewers can find options like contacts, terms and conditions etc. There is also used WWF' logo.

The next one is RSPCA - 'The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a charity operating in England and Wales that promotes animal welfare'. Layout for the web page is simple, using limited colours. The first thing which shows up while entering the site is a feature of 'Donation', going down the page the viewer can see photographs of animals people can donate for.

Guide Dogs - 'Introduction to how Guide Dogs makes a difference through mobility, campaigning and research'. Thought Guide Dogs web page people can sponsor dogs. By sponsoring a puppy consumers will receive a gift pack. On the bottom of the page you can find features like contact details and some useful information

The last one is PDSA - PDSA provides free veterinary care to the sick and injured pets of people in need and promotes responsible pet ownership. On their webpage viewers can donate, and get involved. Compared to the webpages from the previous charities which I have found this page has lots of different features. Everywhere you move your cursor some new features are showing up. I feel it is quite confusing.
