Type in context - Research

During this stage I have looked at different types of the publications just to get some idea for this brief. I have checked the Urban Outfitters shop as they have a large selection of different books.

Publication Ideas

Small book or guide for tourists about what to do in Poland is specific places + illustrated map of the city and how to get to those places.

A coffee table book:

- 'one topic' - Polish culture/ religion etc
- showing a day to day in Poland with high quality photos, large format A3/ A2
with hard back.

Some examples which I have found at Urban Outfitters web page:

Type in context - Primary research / Research

To get some more understanding and find some real examples I went to the Village Bookshop in Leeds. The Village is a book shop for, magazines, books, self published zines and other items such us prints and stationary. They have a range selection of the magazines were about fashion or art and design. There was a great use of image on the front covers and content of these publications. The other thing was the size of the magazines they were in quite large format. I think it would be a great idea and appropriate option to create something in a large format like A4 or A3 for this brie as I have never done it before, my books/publication were always in A5 format, so it would be something new for me. However it would cost more to produce it, depending on the amount of pages.

Type in context - Preparation

Before beginning my research, I started to plan my time a bit and make a basic mind map on what to consider for the brief. As I started this brief a bit to late I thought it might be helpful to do a list so I know exactly what to do  for the brief as a whole.

The first step of my plan which I have already done is analysis which allows you to start thinking more in depth of the brief. The next stage is research which allows you to get the understanding of the theme and look on different real examples of work. In this brief I need to research a lot into different binding methods, stock, layout and size to make appropriate response to this brief.

Creating a mind map I could think of different stocks, size of the publication, layout and binding.

Brief - Type in context

Based on your primary research exploring type in a specific geographic context, you will produce a
publication entitled "Type in context: <name of place>". Through the summer task you will have collected
numerous images and written copy about uses of typography in your local area. This content will then be
used in your publication.
Your publication will feature images and text related to typography and will be printed and bound to high
standard. Your publication will be positioned as an "art & photography" book therefore considerations
should be made to target audience when designing your publication. The size, format and number of pages are entirely your choice.
Editorial design and binding is something that you already have some experience of therefore this
assignment will give you the opportunity to build on what you have already learned about this area.
This is a 6 week assignment therefore you will be expected to produce a very well developed, polished
piece of graphic design. Make use of your time carefully in order to ensure that your publication is the best
it can be.
Content considerations:
  • Research - art & photography books, grid systems, audience
  • Experiments, developments, evaluate
  • Type and layout
  • Photo quality / editing
  • Preparing your document to print
Production considerations:
  • stock
  • print method
  • binding method
  • mock ups / experiments (evaluate)
  • finishes
  • commercial considerations vs. access to resources
  • Preparing documents to be sent to print - any considerations in regards to print methods                                    (digital or offset)
  • Understanding colour/ink and related standards and systems (CMYK, Pantone, etc.)
  • identifying spot colour, spot varnish, die cut, emboss, and other finishes in digital art work ready                         for print
  • what printers will be expecting - marks, bleeds, etc.

Analysis:

Since this brief coincides with summer task, it has give me a lot of time to think about it. This brief is 6 weeks long so I would try make the most of it to complete it with successful solution of final idea. As this is publication, there is a lot of work which needs to be done.

I really enjoy editorial work and I think this is one of my strengths so I am optimistic about this brief as a whole. I fell I have gathered a range of interesting photographs from Poland which will allow me to create something engaging and enjoyable to read.

At first I need to organise my time and try to make a plan as this will keep me prepared and on track with the brief. I need to start research different ideas  as soon as possible. I would visit existing book shops in Leeds to get more understanding. My aim is to produce successful publication, the one I can be proud of.

A - Z Type in context

As I went on a short holiday to Poland I have decided to take some photos there. I stayed a bit in Krakow and Poznan. I have taken couple of photos of signage and wall art. The photographs came out very interesting and effective. Here are some of the photos I collected from the holiday:
